What Are Mini Splits Units?

A ductless mini-split system is a compact unit designed to heat and/or cool specific areas of your home without requiring ductwork, eliminating the need to expand your existing ducts. These systems consist of an outdoor unit paired with a small, wall or ceiling mounted indoor unit that provides heating and cooling precisely where and when needed. The only modification to your home is a small wall opening, typically about 3 inches in diameter, for the refrigerant hoses, power and drain connections

How do They Work?

A ductless mini-split system works on the same principles as larger HVAC systems. The exterior unit draws in air through one or two vents. Some units have vents on the side and back, so the unit may need to be installed a foot or two from the exterior wall of your home. The unit also has an air outlet vent on the front. Some models may need to be mounted on a platform to allow for proper airflow, protect the unit from the elements, and prevent sinking and shifting. The unit draws air in and delivers it to the interior of your home through a small, flexible tube. The interior unit heats and cools the air and delivers it into the space. Ductless mini-split systems are controlled by a remote control or from your phone using an app.

What are some of the the advantages of mini split systems?

  1. These systems have no ducts; therefore they avoid the energy losses that are typically associated with them. Generally duct losses account for roughly 30% of energy consumption, especially if the ducts are in an unconditioned space such as an attic.

  2. They are easier to install than other systems.

  3. Mini-splits offer more flexibility in interior design options. The indoor air handlers can be suspended from a ceiling, mounted into a drop ceiling, hung on a wall, and finally floor-standing models.

  4. The compressor is assembled outside so the units are relatively quiet.

  5. Considered “small” compared to room air conditioners, mini splits can manage to cool several areas all at the same time.

  6. Each mini-split unit has its own programmable thermostat that can cool the one room, or multiple according, to preference.

  7. You don't need to worry about messy ducts and air diffusers

  8. If you have several units cooling your space and one goes down... big deal, you can still have some cooling and heating.

  9. Energy Savings
